Baby Days

Well, these precious baby days with Shad seem to be going by faster than I would like them to.  He turns 25 weeks old today (or 5 1/2 months +).   He's reaching some significant milestones and I dread the day that he'll be crawling, which I'm sure will be soon.  A mobile baby means more things to get into and more things to keep cleaned.   One thing you don't have to do once you've had your first baby is ever childproof the house again.  Our house has been child-proof for 13 years!  I will have to retrieve the baby gate from the attic soon.  We only have one set of stairs in our house... the stairs to the basement, but with 2 bedrooms downstairs, it's going to be fun trying to keep that basement door closed so he doesn't take a tumble!

We have discovered that Shad loves books.  He likes to be read to, but mostly he likes to chew on them.  Most babies like black and white contrasts, so anything typed up in black and white (like the weekly bulletin at church) is a favorite "toy".

Since he has his two bottom teeth now, he is really interested in using them.  I've allowed him to gnaw on dense bread (whole grain slices from small loaves or a section of bagel).  Of course, I hold it while he chews and watch that the portion he is working on isn't pulled off - that could be a choking hazard!  He loves it!

He eats really well during the day (his rice cereal), but he still isn't too fond of his baby food.  I've tried a couple different things now over the course of several weeks and he really doesn't want it.   BUT, if you're eating... he thinks he wants whatever is on your plate! I've eaten most of my meals with him on my lap, but now he's at the point where you can't keep those little hands from grabbing onto the plate.  I try to move it away, but then he just grabs the place mat and pulls the whole thing toward him.  I guess it's time to get the highchair out of the attic, too.
Titus was that way, too.  I remember when he was just four months old and we took a trip to Ohio to see my folks.  We ate at the local DQ that day and right when I was about to take a bite out of my burger, Titus reached up, grabbed it, and shoved that burger right into his slobbery little mouth!    Must be a boy thing.

Besides chewing on toys, Shad loves to bite on the shoulder of whoever is holding him.  Most of us walk around during the day with a wet puddle on our sleeve!  So,  this week we bought him his first chilled chew toy.  He likes it a lot.  I've always felt really bad for my babies when they cut teeth.  You know it has to hurt!  Anything as simple as a chew toy that can ease the pain a little is wonderful!

Our "little guy" is wearing size 6-9 month clothes, is 28 inches long, and weighs somewhere around 17.5 pounds.
